Health Insurance in India: What to Check Before You Buy

Health insurance is difficult to compare because the headline sum insured is only one part of the contract. The practical value of a policy depends on how it treats hospital access, waiting periods, cost-sharing, exclusions and continuity over many years.

Start with the type of cover

Decide whether you are comparing an individual policy, a family floater, a senior-focused product or cover provided through an employer. Employer insurance can be valuable, but it may end when employment changes. An individually owned policy gives you continuity that is not tied to one job.

Look beyond the sum insured

Check whether important benefits have separate limits. Room eligibility, disease-specific limits, co-payment clauses, deductibles and non-medical expenses can change what you actually pay during hospitalisation. Read the Customer Information Sheet and the detailed wording together.

Understand waiting periods

Health policies may apply waiting periods to pre-existing diseases and specified treatments. Current IRDAI rules set boundaries for how these clauses operate, but the exact wording and applicable period for your policy should be verified in the issued document. Do not rely on a salesperson’s verbal summary.

Check the cashless network realistically

A long hospital list is less useful than a usable one. Search for hospitals you would genuinely consider near home, work and family. Confirm the current network on the insurer or third-party administrator’s official source because hospital arrangements can change.

Read co-pay and deductible clauses

A co-pay makes you responsible for a percentage of an admissible claim. A deductible generally makes you absorb a defined amount before certain cover responds. These can reduce premium, but they also shift cost back to you. Model a ₹2 lakh and ₹5 lakh hospital bill to understand the effect rather than looking only at the annual premium saving.

Ask how restoration works

Restoration or refill benefits sound similar across products but can differ. Check whether restoration is triggered after partial or full exhaustion, whether it can be used for the same illness, and whether restrictions apply to related persons or claims in the same year.

Disclose medical history carefully

Answer proposal questions completely and keep a copy of what was submitted. If an intermediary fills the form, review every answer before acceptance. Medical disclosure should be factual and specific; do not guess at diagnoses or hide treatment because you think it is minor.

Check continuity features

Long-term health cover is not only about this year’s premium. Understand renewal, migration and portability rights, how waiting-period credits are treated, and what happens if you move between products or insurers. Keep prior policy schedules and renewal records.

Before you pay

  • Download the policy wording and Customer Information Sheet.
  • Check nearby network hospitals.
  • Note every waiting period relevant to your family.
  • Calculate the effect of co-pay/deductible clauses.
  • Check room, procedure and disease sub-limits.
  • Confirm exclusions and claim notification steps.
  • Save the proposal form and disclosure answers.

Test the policy against your family’s likely use

A useful health-policy comparison uses real household needs rather than a generic score. If parents live in another city, check network hospitals there. If one member has ongoing treatment, identify the waiting-period and disclosure rules that could affect that condition. If you expect maternity cover, do not assume it is included merely because the product is comprehensive—read the benefit, limits and waiting conditions. The goal is to understand the contract before you need care.

Keep a renewal file from year one

Store every schedule, endorsement, proposal response, renewal notice and important insurer email. When terms change, compare the new schedule with the previous year rather than looking only at premium. A long-running record also helps you demonstrate continuity if you later migrate or port cover, subject to the applicable rules at that time.

Health insurance terms are regulated but product wording varies. Verify current requirements and your exact policy directly with the insurer and IRDAI materials.

Sources and verification

Insurance rules and product terms change. These official sources are the starting point for checking the current position before you act.
